The HARDI member spotlight serves as a regular feature through which the association management highlights standout individuals in the HVACR industry and their companies. For our November Member Spotlight, we spoke with John Lee, Assistant Branch Manager for Refrigeration Supplies Distributor (RSD) based out of Riverside, California. In this Q&A interview, we spoke with John about his journey through the HVACR industry and the steps he has taken to work his way up.
How did you get into the HVACR industry?
I entered the HVACR industry right out of High School. My father had been in the industry for 25 years and I wanted to follow in his footsteps of success.
What has your career path in the HVACR industry looked like?
I am proud to say that I started with RSD as a Driver. I worked my way through Warehouse Management and then was given the opportunity to move to Counter Sales, where I continue to train to become a Branch Manager. Being on the line, getting a first-hand view of the customer experience, has allowed me to learn more & more every day to become the best manager I can be.
You recently attended HARDI's Branch Manager Workshop, how has this impacted your journey to becoming a Branch Manager?
Since the workshop, I have taken on many more responsibilities. It has allowed me to trust in delegating some of my day to day tasks to fellow employees. I am much more confident in my daily routine, based on some of the simple tips Jason gave us. Especially when it comes to conflict resolution, managing inventory, and just getting more familiar with some Key Performance Indicators.
The KPI's are something I had never learned before, so it was nice to just get an idea of exactly what they are and how they can be applied. The KPI's can prove improvement, so I like having a tool that shows my team's growth.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
It may sound cliche, but my favorite thing about working in this industry in general is when we get to be the superhero. It is rewarding to be able to take some basic information from a customer, and then find a solution to their problem that ends up saving the day! Customer satisfaction is what it is all about, and working my way from a Driver, through the Warehouse, to Counter Sales has helped me to see the full picture.
What is your favorite thing to do with your team?
I enjoy working together towards accomplishing goals that we set for ourselves to achieve and will set us apart from our competition. It's not just a "me" effort, but it's a team effort, and I enjoy leading my team to accomplish our goals and strive to be the best. I enjoy seeing their enthusiasm and hunger to progress and get better every day.
