The HARDI member spotlight serves as a regular feature through which the association management highlights standout individuals in the HVACR industry and their companies. For our January Member Spotlight, we spoke with Tom Boutette, President/CEO of Johnstone Supply (B&B Trade Distribution Centre). We highlight Tom for coming in as the new Chairman of HARDI, and all the work he does to help improve HVAC Distribution in Canada.
Where is HARDI headed in 2020 under your leadership?
There's a lot going on, and it's pretty exciting. I'm just going to try to hang on for the ride because there's so many people involved, which is great. I’ve always said if you want to be successful, hire people who are smarter than you, and our new BOD is full of people who are a lot smarter than me, so I look forward to working with them and helping in whatever way I can and moving our 2020 plan forward as Talbot outlined in the breakfast this morning. It’s very exciting and I’m happy to be here.
What are your goals as HARDI Chair?
One specific goal is to get through the year and work with the team and see where I can fit in to help out along the way.
What is your 2020 New Year’s Resolution?
Probably to eat better. Believe it or not, as you get older you tend to have old habits that sometimes don’t always work so well so I have to watch what I eat in the future and eat better.
What do you do for fun in the Winter?
Go south. Get away from the snow. But really, we have children in Vancouver, and children in London, where we get real winters. Vancouver is milder in the Winter, so we visit them for a few weeks and then go south for a few weeks in the winter just to break the monotony of the snow. Lorraine and I love to travel so we generally travel in the winter quite a bit.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
Paris, France. It’s one our favorites and Italy runs a close second. We really do enjoy both of those countries.
Anything else you would like to share?
Well I’d just say if you know people who aren’t members, and they’re in the wholesale distribution industry, you should really take a minute and try to convince them that this [HARDI] is a good thing. Not only for them personally, but good for their business. The information and the techniques I’ve learned over the many years of coming to these conferences has been invaluable. People ask me, “well you’ve been to so many of these, doesn’t it get boring?” And like you asked me today, every time I come, I go away with something new, and my staff actually gets scared when I come home, because I have new ideas.
We look forward to Tom's leadership in 2020!
