Greetings from Denver! I am writing to you from here at the Modern Distribution Management (MDM) Analytics Summit 2018. CEO Tom Gale and his team at MDM have gathered a fascinating group of presenters. A great conference [like HARDI’s in Austin in December, hardiconference.com] is like a great concert — the audience is a critical part of the experience. The questions from the distributor audience have been fascinating and help us digest the ideas being presented. Those questions have led to great discussions in the hallways after the sessions.

I think everyone’s favorite presentation was by a distributor from Germany who described his continuing journey to effectively measure activity and then translate that into actionable guidance for his teammates. His challenges were recognizable to all the guests who appreciated his honesty in describing the missteps and lessons learned. The sharing of experiences was an important part of this event as it is for our members at the HARDI annual conference.

The panel discussion and contrast between Dr. Michael Wu, who was here to discuss the future of Artificial Intelligence or AI with distribution, and benchmarking legend Dr. Al Bates was terrific. Solid fundamentals were crucial to the success of John Wooden and are just as important to great leaders like Gregg Popovich and Bill Belichick. Distribution continues to evolve but the key to success is based on attention to detail in driving the fundamentals. The objective of applying AI to distribution will be to optimize operating performance. Good benchmarking programs, Al Bates’ life’s work, is based on defining the analytical relationships and values that correspond with good performance.

Our benchmarking programs TRENDS, Unitary Market Report, DPD and Compensation Survey are all about optimizing performance. HARDI’s Analytics and Business Intelligence Council works with these programs. We need members for this council to help us decide how to refine these services to help members identify what is “good” and devise plans to get there until an artificial intelligence system can do it for us.

The successful distributor from Germany who shared his engaging stories of the bumpy road of experience does not have advanced degrees in computer science or statistics or business management. He took a step here and there and kept trying because he wanted to get better and believed analytics was the key to improving his operations. HARDI’s Analytics and Business Intelligence Council needs members like that who are passionate about improving the performance of their organization through effective analytics and planning. If you are early on this journey then your fresh perspective will be extremely valuable as we continually fine-tune these services.

Please contact me if you would like to be a part of this exciting council, and together we can work our way towards defining and achieving “good” or better.
